Singer Golden Touch and Sew Sewing Ma…

I’m thinking of buying a used Singer Golden Touch and Sew sewing machine. I would appreciate any information on this machine as I am unfamiliar with Touch and Sew machines. I understand that at one time these machines were very popular. What has been other users’ experience (good or bad) experience with these machines?

Julia, I have the first Touch and Sew machine that came out in 1965. I won't part with it, it sews beautifully. It has metal gears, I was told they don't make them like that any longer. It's a wonderful machine. The only problem I've encountered is once in a while the bobbin tension gets messed up. They told me that is because of the wind in place bobbin. I am sure you will enjoy your machine.

*Is the Touch and Sew 620 the same machine you refer to? I saw one today at the fabric store for $98 with cams, accessories and a booklet. It was well cared for. I need a good machine to straight stitch and zig zag. I have heard this machine may or may not cause problems with the bobbin because it winds in the machine. If your bobbin tension gets messed up, how do you correct that? Thanks.

*Julia, after sitting at the shop for about a 1/2 hr. alone, working with the T & S 620, I went back today and bought it. This machine was well cared for. I love it! I made a welders' cap tonight on it. I like the quality of the stitches, it is quieter than my now machine, and seems smoother operating. I hope to have this machine for a long time.

*This brings back memories. Around 1964 my best friend's mother purchased a Golden Touch & Sew. It was top of the line and cost $500. I remember thinking WOW--how can anybody be so rich!! She was a former home ec teacher and sewed loads of clothes for 6 children. She used to buy fabric by the bolt. It was a wonderful machine.

*I bought my singer Golden Touch & Sew 32 years ago. I remember because it's the same age as my daughter. I think I paid around $360 for it. I remember because it took me at least 3 years to pay it off, $10 a month, which seemed a lot back then. A few years ago I bought a new Bernina. My husband asked me the other day if I wanted to get rid of the Touch & Sew which was taking up space in the garage cabinet. I told him definitely "no". It's not only a great backup but the buttonhole attachment still makes the best buttonholes and, when I have an especially difficult fabric, I haul out the Touch & Sew. I thought maybe I would give it to my daughter if she ever caught the sewing bug but, even if she does, I doubt if I've give it up.

*I am sorry to say that the Singer touch and sew machine I bought only lasted me 2 months. The gears were stripped and was not worth repairing, the sewing shop said. I started having problems winding the bobbin towards the end. So, I would not buy another one.

*My mother-in-law gave me a touch & sew. It sewed well, but when the main belt gave, it would have cost over $200 to replace. I threw in the towel and bought a new home MC3500. Much better machine. The older machines are just too durn cantankerous(unless anyone has an old singer featherwight portable....)

*I had a Touch&Sew, that did not even last a month. I bought it, because the machine was in pristine condition, not a scratch etc.I carefully studied the manual and I was amazed how many stitches it could do. First, it was sewing beautifully! Then, one day something happened, there was a loud cracking noise from inside and that was the end of its sewing life. The gears broke. Some refer to this machine as "Don't Touch because it won't Sew"I'm glad to hear some of you had better luck.A.J.
