   *Hello.This is my first time posting here. I need some advice. I have a Necchi 3101FA which I bought before I knew anything about sewing. I have learned some basic sewing skills on this machine, but have always found it an exercise in patience. I've never been sure if it was me, the machine, something wrong with the machine, or simply not enough knowledge on my part of how properly to use the machine.I'm thinking of getting a sewing machine with more features and wondered if anyone could speak to the hidden wonders of my current sewing machine that I haven't yet discovered. If not, what do people think of the question of mechanical vs. computerized machines? I want to be able to sew clothes for myself and my kids, so I don't need anything with a lot of bells and whistles. Can you safely pick up either of these machines used? Would you always go through a dealer when you buy a machine?Thanks for any help you can give.Catherine

   *Hi J. & Catherine,I recently purchased a Janome 4800, which is practically the same thingas the Elna 6005 (Janome makes them both in addition to Kenmores) and Idon't think I'll ever go back to owning only mechanical sewing machines.My main reason for choosing this machine was the buttonholes it offered- 6 in all, including a keyhole style - and the degree of precision itafforded; I had originally hoped I could afford a Pfaff and I'm now gladI wasn't able to!In addition to all this, I've become employed by a Janome/Brother dealersince buying this machine and Janomes very rarely come back with problems- as a matter of fact, sewers who have been using them and are lookingto upgrade are adamant about buying Janome again; we don't have any Elnas,but you can rest assured that it's top quality (in the words of AllBrands:"Janome-New Home is the world's largest manufacturer ofcomputerized home sewing machines. All Janome, Elna, and Sears-Kenmoremachines are made in Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand.  They are recognizedby buyers as the best quality, most user friendly machines even thoughthey lag behind Brother and Juki (Singer) in the latest technology. "...In short, don't be afraid of electronics - as long as they receive theusual amount of care, you should be fine and they'll do many more tricksthat any mechanical could...And Catherine, as for buying used through a dealer or not, it does depend on how comfortable you are assesssing a machine or whether you have a friend who could advise you on your potential purchase; if you buy from an individual (who you are not acquainted with), you are taking a chance... Buying from a dealer is safer - many of them sell used machines and supply their own warranty. Your first step should be to read John Giordano's book, 'The Sewing Machine Guide: Tips on Choosing, Buying, and Refurbishing'(from Taunton). It will walk you through all the steps of buying either new or used as well as teach you how to care for your new machine

   *Hi, J.I have the Elna 6004 - and I love it. I got it 2+ years ago, after using (and loving) and old Elna SU mechanical. It stitches beautifully, and the buttonholes are a dream. I wish sometimes that I had spent the money to upgrade to a greater number of decorative stitches, because I use them more than I thought I would (I have twin granddaughters now!) The decorative stitches (and the alphabets) are super easy to use. I'm not sure how the 6005 is different - I hope you like it as well as I like mine.mj
