Making your own supplies

I am attempting to make my own tailor’s ham and seam roll. I found directions on dimensions in THE DRESSMAKER’S HANDBOOK published in 1967, indicates stuffing the thing with hardwood sawdust. I’d appreciate any tips from anyone who’s done this! (I’ve made the ham, but haven’t stuffed it yet.)

I haven't made the ham, but you can make a decent seam roll by covering a rolled up magazine.
