finding the right sewing machine

Porfiro | Posted in General Discussion on

Help! I am looking for a used sewing machine. My first (1971) machine was a Bernina, bought because it was to last forever. I am a self-taught sewer with very slow learning. None the less, I have developed a love for sewing. I say “was” because I was told that may machine had problems that could not be fixed (approx. 10 yrs ago), continued to have it worked on till 2002. Totally frusterated I tossed the machine! What a mistake. Eventually I purchased a mid-range Janome. It has been okay, but it doesn’t come close to what my Bernina did. Sewing has become a “little” more challenging because of my disability, and I would like a machine with more capabilites. The big problem of course it lack of money. I cannot afford a new machine with the features I am looking for, such as, dual feed, total stitch control, multi-spool ability, hand looking stitches, and knee contol. I live in Oklahoma and would absoluted love some feedback on machines and how to find a used machine from an individual or company that I can trust

Please forgive me if I am hard to follow. I am brand new to Threads and doing this talking on the internet! Blessings to ya all!

I think it is really smart to buy from a dealer.  A dealer will stand behind his product and take care of any problems you may have.  If you buy online or from an individual you are on your own.  Having said that, I would go to several dealers with your list of wants and see which machines would fit your needs.   Once you have that list you know exactly what your choices are.  Ask if any of the dealers have a used one and if they don't, ask them to let you know when they do get one traded in.  You can also be upfront about what your budget is and ask which machine would come closest to filling your needs. People are upgrading all the time and there are wonderful used machines out there,   And there is always Craigslist - people are always selling the late grandma's machine - there's just no warranty involved.  Happy New Year.  I hope you find what you are looking for.

    good sewing machine

I'm sew sorry you tossed your Bernina!  You don't say which model it was--I sewed on an 830 for over 30 yrs. and now my granddaughter uses it.  I've also purchased additional 830 for my 3 other granddaughters from auction sites.   I look for one owner machines( my theory being those ladies purchased a top of the line machine in their 50-60y/o and now are in nursing homes or have died and families are selling the machines)  They are an excellent buy.  If you need more info email me.
