Fiber/fabric identification?

sanderson | Posted in Equipment and Supplies on

Can anyone direct me to a method of fabric identification? I just bought some unidentified yardage from the local thrift shop. It is swaded on one side and quite satiny on the other. The selvedges look sort of like velveteen. I’ve never done a burn test. Thanks.

A good friend of mine, who is a Forensic Biologist, once asked me how we sewists identify fibre content. Turns out it is the same way she does - the old infallible burn test!

*Does everybody but me know what a bum test is? What is it?

*Hey, Sanderson, google works here too!! Check it out.

*Ummm... Marion... that would be buRN test, not buM test.It is where you take a small sample of the fabric in question and hold it carefully over a flame with tweezers. Then, depending on the smell of the burnt fabric and the resulting residue, you can determine the fibre content.Of course, I could be very wrong about this, if one has sensitive nerve endings in one's posterior.

*Thanks for the google reminder...and Karen, burning bums is not very nice...you should just turn the other cheek.

*Aren't they nice to let us play over here, too? My sewing room/studio shares a wall with the landlords office. I'd better get these burning issues taken care of while I can still leave the windows open. Will you guys vouch for me if I get busted? The lease does say not to engage in fire hazzards.

*I think I'd probably take a small sample and torch it over the kitchen sink, myself. Let us know if you set off the smoke alarm.

*I haven't laughed so hard in AGES!!!If we do detect a burning smell coming from your kitchen, would it be proper to surmise that we are in the cooking web site?

*Karen, you should come over and cook with us....we have lots of laughs!
