   Sorry, I was too quick with the enter key. I am making a square dance outfit with narrow "shirt tail" type hems on the skirt bottom ruffle and sleeve ruffles. The resulting hem resembles those found on men's dress shirts. These areas will get little to moderate stress. Since the fabric I am using is trimmed in gold, I would like to use the Sulky Gold Metallic. I have a Viking 1+ and will be using the 1/4 " narrow hem foot. Since these types of narrow rolled hems are made with the wrong side of the fabric up, can I use the Sulky in the bobbin if I sew carefully and slowly? Also, is metallic thread strong enough for a hem especially if a standard poly/cotton thread will be used in the needle? The outfit will be laundered in cool water with standard detergent, dried in a dryer and pressed with a warm iron.

   *susan, it's been awhile since you wrote this, so you may have solved the problem. i can only suggest that you try it. that's what i do--make samples until i'm sure about all the details for a garment. i'm sure some metallic threads are stronger than others (some really tend to fray). in general, special threads work well in the bobbin. you could also ask a thread company like Sulky or YLI (www.ylicorp.com) which one of their threads would be suitable. after you make a couple of samples, launder them as you plan to care for the garment, and see how it works. be careful pressing metallic threads, though--some of them melt with heat.
