Good choice?

Virginia Mom | Posted in Creative Machine on

I am considering an Elna 8000 on E-Bay and would love any feedback you might have on this machine. My current one is a mechanical Elna that is just wonderful.

I have the impression that the 8000 is a somewhat older machine, but it seems like there are advantages to getting one that is Swiss-made. Most of my sewing involves clothing construction and household items. I’d rate my skill level as above average.

It seems like it would be fun to have some embroidery capabilities, but not enough to go out and spend $1000+ for a brand new machine. If I get the 8000, my current machine will go to my daughter.

I would be really careful buying a used machine on ebay.  The reason?.........if it fails to work, you have no recourse.  Ebay is great and I know lots of folks buy and sell lots of things but I would be really cautious with something like a sewing machine.  I happened to be at my local dealership when a call came in from a lady that bought a machine on ebay (the same brand as the dealership) and wanted them to fix it because when she got it, it was crammed with thread, didn't work, etc., etc.  Well, the dealership wasn't about to repair it for free when she didn't buy from them.........and she was fussing because she just got it and paid a fair amount for it and she didn't want to pay more to have it fixed!

The moral of the story is..........buyer beware!

People should check for the cost of an overhaul before buying any used machine-EBay or not.  That can add $75. and more.  You will also learn if parts are available.

I checked PatternReview's sewing machine review and could not find a review or comments.  Maybe someone at this forum is familiar with this model.  Have you asked any questions of the seller.....year built, mechanical or computerized, do they have all the attachments and manual?  Also check their feedback and rating.

If it has been taken care of, this is probably a very good machine - best of luck!

One more thing to consider is how this machine will be shipped to you.  Does the seller still have all of the original packaging.  Shipping a sewing machine surrounded by styrofoam peanuts or quilt batting is not enough.  I've purchased 2 machines off ebay but they were not expensive and if all failed I would not lose sleep over the money spent.  Also, when checking feedback, be advised that many times bidders who have not been satisfied may be hesistant to leave feedback because some sellers abuse the system by leaving retaliatory feedback.  Best of luck!

Thanks for the thoughtful responses. The buyer is charging $50 for shipping including insurance, so it doesn't sound like s/he is just chucking it in a box. Perhaps I should have posted this in the first place, so you would know what I do:Elna 8000 - this is a great, user-friendly machine! I am selling it only because I bought a new Elna Quilter's Dream 2 at a recent quilt show. I need to make room for my new machine.Features: needle up/down setting; feed dogs up/down; 84 utility stitches including 3 buttonholes, alphabet, and decorative stitches;prolonged reverse stitching, free-armIncluded: owner's manual, 6 bobbins, assorted feet, elastic and faggoting plates, soft cover, and large 24 x 17 Sew-Steady acrylic extension tableGently used. Recently serviced. Well-maintained.

I have 2 Elnas...The Super purchased 1970 and the 8000 purchased 1995. I was disappointed in the The 8000 from the start but have not replaced it because of cost. In other words it is bought and paid for and at close to $1000 new I am stubborn about having invested so much in it back then. I had it in for repairs twice and was told both times that was strange unsuccessful clone of the 9000, its more expensive sister and therefore it was not manufactured for long and has always had problems. I would not buy it used or new for that matter. And I am looking at replacing it this year.
