Soft sculpture — where do I begin?

I am just beginning to experiment with soft sculpture. It’s quite like me to do things the hardest way possible, though. So, if you have any book reccomendations, or general advice, I’d really appreciate it! My first project is to be a snail — I think his shell will be a wrinkly silk…can you think of a very slimy-feeling fabric for his
body? I’m also thinking of weighting the base and keeping the shell lofty. Any suggestions on how to do this? What about his eyes? I’m not asking you to do the project for me, honest!
I’m just trying something new, and seeking advice. Thanks again!

*Soft sculpture was big in the late 70's early 80's. You should probably check out the craft section of your local library. I remember some good books (but not the titles) from then. My quess that most of those books are no longer in print. You may also want to check out some of the folks who sell used books online for info.
