I have the issue. If you can't locate a copy, I imagine it's permissible for me to scan the article and send to you?

Oh wouldn't that be wonderful. Am looking for that article with, as I remember many details on nthe "inner"construction of the famous purple dress worn by Hillary (1993?) - designed by Sarah Phillips??
Am making a graduation/prom dress for my grand daughter - material is expensive pure silk taffeta- getting nervous and remembered that article that I thought would help.
I do appreciate your help - sewers unite!!

That is one of my favorite articles. I don't think I'd ever read such an indepth article about the inner structure of a gown. And it was illustrated with lots of diagrams and photos of the inside construction.

Thank you for your encouragement. Now if only I could find my copy. I remember some of the details. I now think I loaned a few copies of Threads to a sister of mine who lives miles and miles away.

That was one of the first Threads I bought...and it was 5 yrs. old then. It is still one of my favorite articles. It was the one that made me realize that there was soooo much more that I wanted to learn! Glad you got a response that will get you the article.

Great to hear from you. Am now in a quandary about types of boning. Metal spiral seems highly recommended but haven't found a source yet. Rigalene? looked good but can form little prickles that can go through fabric to discomfort of wearer. Any thoughts out there?

There's a list of spiral steel boning sources at the end of this Threads article:

BTW, regarding the construction of a boned gown, have you looked at Susan Khalje's excellent book, 'Bridal Couture'?
It is filled with illustrations and detailed advice for really fine inner and outer construction--probably should be on the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in making high-level gowns:
