altering satin prom gown

I need some guidance in where to begin altering a princess-style, sleeveless prom gown with attatched lining. My daughter is more slender than the dress, which we got at a deep discount (which makes it worth altering). The fabric is acetate with a polyester lining. We need to re-hem (not a problem), but also to shorten the shoulder straps and take in the bodice area.

Any recommendations about references or procedures would be helpful.

The easiest way to make the straps shorter is to carefully rip the back seam where the strap is sewn in--don't ripmore than just to loosen the strap--and pull the strap through until it is the length you want. Measure the new strap length while your daughter is wearing the gown. Mark with a small safety pin will make sure that your mark won't fall out while you are pulling through the seam. Pin and resew the seam.

For the bodice, the easiest is to take in the 2 side seams. If it is several sizes to big, you might have to take in the back princess seams and/or the back zipper (if there is one). Taking in the front pricess seams is the most difficult so I would take in all other seams first.
