adding seem allowance

When working with a pattern where you have to add the seem allowances, does anyone have a tip on how to do that easily, do most of you do it by eye or is there a gadget to make it simple and accurate ?

Thank you in advance

I have added seam allowances in several ways: If it's not critical, I eyeball it (usually about 1/2"), mark it with a sewing gauge (6" ruler) and chalk, or use a rotery cutter with the spacer attached and set to the width I want. You can also get a tracing wheel thaat has a spacer. (I sutter when I talk too) I think Nancy's Notions or Clothilde has them. Chris.

*Hello Line, I use a clear, 2" wide x 18" long ruler. It is marked both vertically and horizontally in 1/8" increments. After my pattern is drafted, I line up the appropriate (3/8", 1/2", 5/8") interior mark and pencil in around the pattern. You can get quite handy with marking curves neatly with a little practice.--lin

*I do it on the paper pattern. My tape measure is 5/8" wide, so I just line it up next to the seamline, and mark. It also works when you can mark you fabric with chalk or pen.

*I use patterns from the Burda magazine a great deal. Åfter tracing the pattern I use a school compass, made by Fiskars, I believe. It is plastic and has a rubber 'point' which does n;ot tear the paper. It has a screw device, so the set distance does not spread out the way the average compass does. It is the most satisfactory method I've found.
