Adding a built-bra

I would like to make a halter top that has no back. However, I need the support of a bra. How do I go about sewing one in? The only instructions that I have come across are for adding a bandeau lining, with bra cups, into a swimsuit. Does anyone have a tips or suggestions?

I did this once, using an old bra that was expendable. Here's how: Finish the dress, making it fit snuggly in the bodice. Cut the straps off the bra and then put it on, fastened in back as usual. Put on the dress. Have some safety pins ready. Pull on the tops of the bra cups till they are in the right position and safety pin in place from the outside of the garment. Next, safety pin the bra band to the side seams of the bodice. Unhook the bra and see how you are doing. Re-hook and re-pin as necessary. When you're satisfied with the placement, hand-tack the bra to the inside of the dress, cutting away the excess bra band.

*stephanie: Thanks, sounds great! but before i try it, doesn't the stitching show tugging on the outside of the garment? and if it's sewn to a dress lining, doesn't it pull the lining out of whack? I'm curious and can't picture how well i could do it. What kind of hand stiching do you use? I am anxious to try this; i have many patterns i haven't sewn yet because i'm afraid of trying the built-in bra (i tried it about 10 yrs ago and it was awful - but i didn't use your method)

*Mary, if the garment is lined then do some machine stitch-in-the-ditch in the side seam through all the layers. I no longer have the garment I put the bra into, so I don't recall what I did at the top - probably just tacked it securely to the facing. As far as whether this produces "tugging" I guess the answer is that when you need to put a bra in a halter top, you have to be realistic. Sad, but true!
